A Quick Travel Guide to Mahadji Shinde Chhatri, Wanwadi

There’s  busy roads of the Pune cantonment hides an architecturally beautiful structure called Mahadji Shinde Chhatri .This place not so big and gets low visitors which makes it an ideal place for people who seek peace away from the noise and traffic of Pune city .The Memorial was constructed outside the sanctum of the Shiva temple and contains a samadhi (memorial) devoted to Mahadji Shinde, a warrior who was the commander during the Peshwa rule of the Maratha Empire from 1760 to 1780.



The memorial contains three storey and is bestowed by a daunting look of past royal splendor, beautifully representing the rich heritage of that bygone era. The entrance gate to this structure is made out of iron which has still not caught rust and remains shiny till date. Once inside you would get amazed by the intricate and detailed carvings on the walls of the memorial.The whole structure was constructed following the Vaastu Hara rules and reflects the exquisite Anglo-Rajasthani style of architecture ,exhibiting a fine blending of two different cultures. The captivating use of multi-colored tinted English styled window glasses vastly enhances the beauty of the memorial. Now coming to the hallways. The hallway is beautifully adorned with paintings and photographs of members of Scindia (Shinde) family. The architectural grandeur of the building is appreciable and its architectural design and beauty will leave you spell bound .

Worth a visit if you are a history lover or have an interest in buildings and architecture. There’s a nominal entry fee of Rs 5 per person and is open all day of the year .


How to reach:

It is around 6kms from Pune Railway station . To reach this place one has to head towards AFMC college on Pune-Pandharpur road and take a right turn towards the Price of Wales road to reach to this place.
